About Detroit Tigers
The Detroit Tigers are an American professional baseball team based in Detroit, Michigan playing as a member club of the American League (AL) Central division. One of the AL's eight charter franchises, the club was founded in Detroit in 1894 as part of the Western League. They are the oldest continuous one-name, one-city franchise in the AL. The Tigers have won four World Series championships (1935, 1945, 1968, and 1984), 11 AL pennants (1907, 1908, 1909, 1934, 1935, 1940, 1945, 1968, 1984, 2006, and 2012), and four AL Central division championships (2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014). The Tigers also won division titles in 1972, 1984 and 1987 while members of the AL East. The team currently plays its home games at Comerica Park in Downtown Detroit.
There are different suggestions as to how the team arrived at its name. It is believed that the name originated from the Detroit Light Guard military unit, who were known as "The Tigers". They had played significant roles in certain Civil War battles and in the 1898 Spanish–American War. The baseball team was still informally called both "Wolverines" and "Tigers" in the news. The earliest known use of the name "Tigers" in the media was in the Detroit Free Press on April 16, 1895. Upon entry into the majors, the ball club sought and received formal permission from the Light Guard to use its trademark. From that day forth, the team has been officially called the Tigers.
When the Tigers won their first World Series in 1935, this came on the back of four previous defeats, consecutively from 1907-09 and then in 1934. The Tigers beat the Chicago Cubs 4-2 despite losing first baseman Hank Greenberg in Game 2.
The next Series victory in 1945 in the aftermath of WWII was a repeat of the previous clash but with a 4-3 scoreline. Twenty three years later, the Tigers were pitted against current champions the St Louis Cardinals and came back from a 3–1 deficit to win three in a row, largely on the arm of MVP pitcher Mickey Lolich, who won three complete games in a single World Series.
The Tigers most recent Series victory was in 1984. This time the opposition was the San Diego Padres and the Tigers had their most emphatic Series win to date, running out 4-1 victors.
Hank Greenberg was a first baseman for the Tigers in the 193os and 1940s. A member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, he was one of the premier power hitters of his generation and is widely considered as one of the greatest sluggers in baseball history. Outfielder Ty Cobb was with the Tigers for 22 years, the last six as player-manager. Al Kaline, popularly known as "Mr. Tiger," played 22 seasons of his great with the Tigers. He is the last Tiger player to be elected to Baseball’s Hall of Fame, receiving 348 of 380 votes, being elected on the first ballot, and the only hall of fame player to play for the Tigers since 1968.
